Harold Borden of Canning, Nova Scotia - who never came back. |

| The War balloon: The British Army had four war balloon units in South Africa. Two observers were sent aloft on a tethered balloon to scout for the enemy ahead of the marching army, or to direct artillery fire during a battle. They dropped their information down in weighted envelopes. (Details on our Tech of War Page).
